Web location: www.RiversHB.nz/karamu/raupere location.. Web location.. Raupere Stream Sub-Catchment 2367 ha During Cyclone Gabielle the Ngaruroro River breached the stop bank in 3 places into the Hastings side. The 3 breaches caused serious flooding to expensive crops and flooded homes in the Twyford and Raupere areas If there were any more breeches, the water could have caused huge damage to the city of Hastings. Why ? It is clear the water could not get down the river due to obstructions and overgrowth, so it did what water will do, made its own path avoiding the blocked river bed and flood overflow area. There are no streams big enough to take away the water & protect Hastings should the stopbank be breached. The stopbank is the only protection Hastings has against the flooded Ngaruroro river. It was a close call as it was breached in only 3 places during the Gabrielle cyclone. Breached 9 places on the Pakowhai side flooding properties to 3m deep. The Raupare stream is marked in BLUE and the stopbank breaches are in RED. (To make the map bigger, ctrl+ rollup with mouse)
The Raupare sub-catchment has: Permanent crop 1331 ha Cropland 620 ha Settlements 173 ha Transport 94 ha Population 2,010 people. |
