Web location.. www.RiversHB.nz /Ngaruroro Under construction. Ngaruroro River Catchment 2,500 km2 The river bed is well filled with shingle and the flood berm-flow areas are well filled with over-growth, the Expressway Bridge abuttments narrow the flood overflow width from 410m wide down to 310m wide, which very much limits how much water can pass under the bridge. These restrictions in the river caused the flood waters to spill-over the stop banks in Gabrielle. The water must be able to get away down the river without restriction to allow the bridges to handle the flood waters.
The flood waters were not able to clear and get away from the bridges effectively… There was a disasterious break through the stop bank just before the bridge at Omahu/Fernhill during Gabrielle. The river is so full of shingle in is nearly at the level of the berm-flow area and the Omahu Marae lawn.
The Expressway Bridge narrows the flood overflow width from 410m down to 310m 11 breaches and spill overs upstream, makes the river narrowing of the Expressway Bridge a major contributor to it along with the overgrowth in the berm-flow areas upstream and downstream. It is urgent that this gets fixed.
